Exclusive: Seagate confirms 3TB drive

After a few weeks of rumours, Seagate’s senior product manager Barbara Craig has confirmed to Thinq that “we are announcing a 3TB drive later this year,” but the move to 3TB of storage space apparently involves a lot more work than simply upping the areal density.

The ancient foundations of the PC’s three-decade legacy has once again reared its DOS-era head, revealing that many of today’s PCs are simply incapable of coping with hard drives that have a larger capacity than 2.1TB.

The root of the problem is the original LBA (logical block addressing) standard, which can’t assign addresses to capacities in excess of 2.1TB. Originally set out by Microsoft and IBM as a part of the original DOS standard, the original LBA standard assigns an address to each 512-byte sector – the smallest physical block of data on a hard drive.

Unfortunately, though, the range of addresses is limited to capacities of 2.1TB. It’s a limit that until now has seemed so far off in the future that hardly anyone’s considered it a problem. “I think that’s what everyone thought,” says Craig. “Nobody expected back in 1980 when they set the standard that we’d ever address over 2.1TB.”

Craig explains that “we need to extend that to Long LBA addressing,” in order to get around this. Long LBA basically increases the number of bytes used to define an LBA address in the command descriptor block, but it also requires a supporting OS.

According to Seagate, this includes the 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Vista, as well as modified versions of Linux, but it doesn’t include Windows XP. Not only that, but you may not even be able to see 2.1TB of a 3TB drive when using Windows XP.

Seagate says that its own tests have shown that as little as 990MB of a 3TB drive could be available to you when using XP.

That is how Zynga’s strategy to make the games come closer to your real life. Nearly 7,000 stores will participate in the promotion, which is Zynga’s first major tie-up with a physical retailer.

According to Dean Takahashi, lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat., it’s a sign of the growing maturity of social games and their reach into the mass market. Zynga hasn’t been viewed as a traditional video game company, especially by hardcore game companies. But this move shows that it is beginning to think big, just as companies such as Electronic Arts. EA stages big promotions for its EA Sports games in the name of making them ubiquitous. Here, Zynga is doing the same, though its audience is arguably much more mass market and casual.

Under the promotion, millions of consumers will be able to redeem exclusive virtual items with Zynga games during a campaign that runs for six weeks starting June 1. For instance, you can buy a real Big Gulp from 7-Eleven and get a virtual version as well. 7-Eleven will advertise the promotion across satellite TV, local radio, print and outdoor venues.

Consumers will be able to purchase specially marked products to receive a redemption code that can be used for a new, limited-edition virtual good in one of three Zynga games. That helps draw attention and traffic to Zynga’s games. Gamers can play those games for free on Facebook, but if they want to buy a virtual good within the games, they have to pay real money for virtual currency. When that happens, Zynga makes money.

Consumers can earn gifts by buying certain items and participating in at least one activity inside a game, such as mastering the growth of a crop FarmVille. If you do the activity, you can earn $200 in FarmVille virtual cash. Rita Bargerhuff, chief marketing officer at 7-Eleven, said it is one of the most unique campaigns in the chain’s history as it gives more than 30 product incentives to Zynga’s 239 million monthly active users.

“Through our promotion with 7-Eleven, we are expanding our reach and making our games more accessible to consumers,” said Vish Makhijani, senior vice president of business operations at Zynga.

The promotion runs through July 15 or while supplies and codes last.

Three books later and I felt like the laziest high-tech maven in the world. The ladies next to me brought twenty softcover novels with them and all of them got wet and messy. 5. The bookmarking and highlighting systems are vastly improved. The original Kindle had two methods for note-taking: you could select text and add a note or you could add a book mark. The new system refines those considerably and adds visual feedback whenever you take a note.

6. The dictionary is now in-line. When you move to a word, its definition appears at the bottom of the page. If you wanted a definition before, you had to pop out to a separate page.

1. It’s bad for research. I’m working on a book right now and I wanted to use the Kindle for all of my research. Sadly, this is almost impossible. The book is a physical object – you can move through it, skimming for notes and important points – and there is something in our education that gives us a sense of space inside a book. I don’t quite know how to explain it, but you know how you can pick up a book and show someone what you’re looking for in a few page turns? You know it was halfway through, maybe a third of the way down the page, and it was near another set of words. The Kindle is not conducive to that kind of mental map-making… yet.

2. It’s horrible for reference. Don’t buy a Kindle of you just read programming manuals. Programming manuals offer something different. While it seems counterintuitive that a document you can search programatically wouldn’t be good as reference material, you’re better off looking up function calls on a website and using the physical book as a guide to building your programs. This is a corallary of point 1, above, so this could change.

3. The Kindle is flimsy. You’ll go through your day thinking you will break your Kindle. You don’t fit that much screen on a thin device that is meant to be thrown into a bag without a care and not risk cracking it. There will come a day when you open your bag and see that your Kindle is dead, even in its case. It’s not your fault. Say it with me: it’s not your fault.

4. It’s not ready for students. Add points 1, 2, and 3 together and you come to the conclusion that this is not ready for students. This may be a good device for English classes requiring lots of long novel reading, but as an education tool it isn’t quite there.

6. No SD slot. While the Kindle can easily hold 1,500 books, what if you’re the kind of person who likes to keep everything in its right place? Maybe you want to make a book playlist? Maybe you have 1,501 books? I don’t know. Sadly, the Kindle doesn’t allow for memory expansion. Not a big deal, but to some it’s a bad thing.

So, plenty of Dell goodies to choose from right now, but if you're a die hard Dell-making-mobiles follower, you've probably been pining for the Streak (previously known as the Mini 5) for much longer than is strictly healthy. What news for you? Well, the mini tablet is apparently supposed to be getting Android 2.1 in September.

The intrepid folks at Engadget nabbed internal slides this morning, which confirm that the five-inch, Google Android device will sport a WVGA (800 by 480) capacitive touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, front-facing VGA camera and 30-pin docking connector. The slides also reveal that the device will arrive in an array of colorful finishes, including black, blue, pink, red and several custom Dell Design Studio finishes.

Darren Murph notes that the Streak 5 will launch with an Amazon content partnership, meaning Kindle e-books and Amazon MP3s and video will stream to the device.

Thirty years later, sending billions of unwanted emails every day, spammers are trying to sell everything from Viagra to alopecia and weight loss treatments or anything else that might obtain money or personal data from users through deception. The word Spam once only referred to a strange form of meat in a can, but the term was later applied to junk email, referencing a comedy skit from Monty Python's Flying Circus, where all meals in a restaurant come with spam, spam and more spam. Junk email has since become the principal meaning of the word spam. Plentiful but not quite so tasty.

The number of spam emails has grown steadily over the past five years and according to recent data, over 92 percent of all e-mails sent in the first three months of 2008 could be classified as spam. Google, for example, has found that users of its email service, Gmail, receive four times more spam today than they did 2004 and the over all trend is only expected to continue upward.

The methods used by companies to send spam have changed a lot in the last three decades. Thirty years ago the senders of spam email had to type in each address by hand, while today powerful software programs known as botnets perform this task at amazing speed, sending out billions of unsolicited emails a day. But spam took a new step in its evolution in 2005 with the use of images such as GIFs and JPEGs which can easily escape anti-spam programs developed to sort through the text content of an e-mail message.

Spammers have continued to find ingenious ways to circumvent the spam filters, including the use of Word documents and other complex file types such as PowerPoint, PDF and zip files. Compressing the spam into ZIP files renders the e-mail unreadable by security gateways and other spam prevention software because a zip file can only be read once it is decompressed, or unzipped.

On of the more recent trends being used by spammers to get the message through is with the use of the MP3 format. The audio files are actually disguised as music by top musicians, which is usually just enough bait to get most people to open them. Stock spammers in particular have been using this method to convince the email recipient to invest in some obscure stock. Again as with most attachments anti-spam filters do not handle attachments very well because they can’t analyze the attachment content.

So why do spammers put so much time and effort into designing such complex files, complete with images and even audio, if the spam can simple be passed through as a text file? While money is always the initial motivation there is apparently the challenge of beating the anti-spam establishment. Spammers admit that spam filters make their job more difficult but at the same time they take pride in the fact that they have never come across a spam filter that they couldn’t get around.

Anti-spam technology has made some great advances in the last few years, but stamping out spam has proved far more difficult than originally imagined. Spam filters can give users a sense of false confidence. They can do their job very well but at the same time that can catch some important documents and for a business this can mean considerable financial loss.

As long as a faction of spam recipients not only open these emails but actually purchase product or service or fall for the various scams involved, spam will continue to flourish. But an educated internet consumer can go a long way in helping to quell that growth.

Your Compaq RAM memory is broken out into many, many tiny pieces of information. If you have 1 GB of memory, you have just over one billion compartments that the computer can fill with data. However, to find that information the computer needs the address of the right compartment. Without getting into the tedious subject of binary math, a 32-bit operating system like XP can address up to 4 GB of memory. More than that and the operating can't use it because it can't create a number big enough to read or write data there.

However a 32-bit operating system addresses 4 GB of memory only theoretically. Many addresses are reserved by the computer hardware so can't be used by Windows or by other software you run. That means that realistically a 32-bit operating system can access only about 3.5 GB of memory. While that's adequate for now, will it be adequate in the future?

64-bit Vista Breaks the Barrier

Users who want to install truly huge amounts of Compaq RAM memory can choose a 64-bit version of Vista instead of a 32-bit version. These have much higher memory limits. 64-bit Vista Home can fully support up to 8 GB of memory, Home Premium 16 GB and other versions 128 GB or more!

Most versions of Vista, particularly the ones pre-installed on off the shelf computers such as Compaq, are 32-bit. Buyers must explicitly ask for the 64-bit version. When you do so, the sky's the limit on your Compaq memory upgrades. Lots of memory translates to terrific performance, so don't let your system be handicapped by 32-bit Vista.

The long and short to this question is yes and no. Confused yet? The yes part of the answer comes from the fact that any computer can get a virus; the no part comes from the fact that it is much more difficult for Macs to contract a virus. There are many reasons for this discrepancy.

To begin with, the new Apple operating systems, like Mac OS X are built based on the UNIX kernel, which has been around the longest, and is the safest operating system available. UNIX is an operating system that was developed in the 1960s by Bell Labs, and believe it or not, was used to play a game called Space Travel after being booted off of the creator�s regular systems. A kernel is another word for operating system; it is technically the first piece to load into memory during a startup. It is usually responsible for things like managing disk drives and handling memory.

The next reason very few Apple users get viruses is basically because when compared to Windows users, there just aren�t that many of them out there. If someone is out to write a damaging computer virus, they want to write one that is going to impact the largest amount of users, and those users are not Apple users. It is estimated that somewhere around 400 million people use the Windows operating system, while Mac users are somewhere in the ballpark of 25 million. To break this down even further, of that 400 million, over 80% of them are home users, the rest use the system for businesses or other uses. On the other hand, for Mac users, nearly 90% of them use their Mac for business use. Movie producers, sound engineers, and graphic artists are some of Mac�s demographic users. Students and recreational users make up a large part of Windows� demographics.

Along the same lines, more virus authors are familiar with the Windows operating system, enabling them to develop viruses for that system easier and more quickly. There is no need to learn a complicated new system and develop a virus around it, even if it will gain you 25 million more victims; it is just too much work. Many of the tools used and scripts written that help virus writers create their mayhem are designed specifically for Windows, so half of the work is already done for them.

It is good to note that those individuals that own a Mac and run the Windows operating system on it as a cross platform machine are vulnerable to Windows viruses, and those systems should be protected with antivirus software, even though they are not factory-genuine Windows models.

For now, Mac users are safer from viruses than Windows users are; many Mac users don�t even have antivirus protection on their computers. Understanding How Drivers Work

Every computer has a number of peripherals and hardware components that give it the natural functionality we have come to expect. This includes a mouse, keyboard, modem, printer and motherboard, among other components.

If these devices are not able to communicate with the underlying operating system, they will not function properly. Thankfully, device drivers are what enable this clear communication. For example, if you purchase a new piece of hardware, it comes included with an installation CD which contains a device driver that allows the hardware to “talk” with your computer.

Why Device Drivers are Important

Device drivers are small codes and files that form a bridge of communication between the hardware and operating system installed on a computer. For the most part, every piece of hardware you install requires a device driver so the system can see it and handle it accordingly. Windows operating systems usually come integrated with numerous device drivers that instantly recognize common desktop hardware components and provide immediate functionality for the end-user.

The Types of Device Drivers

There are many types of device drivers, some of which are specific to certain machines. How Device Driver Updates Work

Device drivers download like any other program and typically act as self-installing files. Most of them download as exe. or executable files. In most cases, you simply need to click on the file and the installation program is launched. The program will usually scan the system first to ensure that the driver corresponds to the installed hardware component. A device driver can often be installed in a matter of seconds, but normally requires a system reboot in order to function properly with the corresponding hardware.

The easiest way to check the status of device drivers on a Windows operating system is to access the Device Manager utility. Simply right-click the “My Computer” icon, select “Properties,” click on the “Hardware” tab, and then choose “Device Manager.” Once you are in the Device Manager window, highlight the hardware device you want to investigate and right-click it. How to Make a Laptop Stand

Laptops might have been designed with portability and long battery life in mind, but they weren't designed for comfort. Use a laptop on your coffee table for more than five minutes and you're transformed into a warped and twisted, hunchbacked visage of a human being, proclaiming thanks that she did, indeed, give us water and the internets.

What we need is something that raises and angles your fine laptop into a more human-friendly angle. And while we do thank the clever clogs for pointing out a book shoved under the back of the laptop would do just that, it's hardly what we'd call an elegant solution as we try and raise ourselves above the level of tramp.

As it happens it's easy enough to grab an acrylic sheet and bend the two ends to produce an effective custom laptop stand. You just need to vary the height of the back-end to adjust the angle. If you're running a performance laptop then it's easy to add cooling via an extra case fan powered off a USB port.

An A3-sized acrylic sheet should be fine for most laptops enough. We've opted for a 3mm thick sheet that costs less than $8, but for laptops over 3kg use a sheet 4mm thick.

What you will need

Instructions

1. At its heart this make is superbly easy, but due to the hot-air gun, we'd recommend a workbench.

2. Make sure you get a decent-sized acrylic sheet, we'll need about 7 to 10cm for the rear fold and 3 to 5cm for the front fold then 20 to 30cm for the main section. As it turns out an A3 sheet is about right and widely available on eBay.

3. Measure and clamp the sheet in place and peel any protective plastic well out of the way. Pop on protective gloves and use the heat gun on a 'cool' 300°C setting. Evenly heat the sheet where you want the fold. This will take a good few minutes.

4. Once you've made the back fold. Do the same for the front. We bent this completely back on itself to make a comfortable fold if we rest it on our legs.

5. That could be it right there, but we're going to add extra cooling. Flip the laptop over and mark out where the cooling vents are, drill/cut slowly otherwise you'll crack the plastic.

6. Take an existing USB cable and strip a suitable length of cable.

7. Choose a low-power fan as it'll only be supplied with 5v rather than the required 12v. Solder the black and red connections together.

8. To make a neat finish, counter sink screw holes in the plastic, so the fan screws will be flush.

9. Our final touch is to add a strip of silicon rubber or you could use rubber pads to stop the laptop from slipping.

10. Done.

Many of today's ID printer manufacturers offer topcoat ribbons to add a varnish layer to cards. However, for maximum protection it is recommended to finish IDs with a full thickness laminate instead. Tests have shown that a simple varnish overcoat can be stripped using chemicals. This allows the data and text on the surface of the card to be manipulated. With actual lamination, any attempt to remove the top layer will destroy the surface underneath. This makes tampering immediately obvious. Thicker versions also deliver UV protection and scratch resistance. Holographic varieties are even more secure and offer an attractive, eye catching appearance.

There are several different ways to apply laminates to ID cards. The in-line method may feature the applicator inside the body of the printer itself (this is referred to as built-in). This option is factory installed at the time of order placement. Modular laminators are attached to an existing printer and can simply be snapped or slid into place. These can be installed in the field by a technician or by the end user. Since the module represents an extension of the existing printer path, it may also be referred to as "in-line". Double sided lamination can be achieved by running a card through the machine twice, or by adding a flip-over station that performs this step automatically. Stand alone units are also available, but the list below will cover only those that come as options on ID printers.
